Sugarbird's Sweet Nothings

I am passionate about food. And cooking. And baking. And running. Come and find a new recipe, a funny story, some strong opinions and whatever else I feel like throwing in the mix today.

About Me

I had to fill in a form the other day which asked me to say some words ‘about me’ and it made me think that I don’t have any of the on my website. Nobody knows who I am or why I write the stuff I do, so I thought I’d write a bit about me, if anyone’s interested.

I’m 29 years old, I am from Johannesburg, South Africa. I now live in Manchester, England. Why? Because of a boy of course. I was born in Jo’burg, lived in New Zealand for a while, lived back in Jo’burg for a while, and then came over to the UK. Lived in Milton Keynes for a while, and now I’m in Manchester. A bit of a Nomad, yes. Once a nomad, always a nomad. Moving gets into your bloodstream and you find it weird staying in 1 place for more than a few years. Where to from Manchester? Who knows. I just know that I won’t be here forever.

Where does my love of baking and cooking come from? I’m not sure. Why does anyone love anything? Why is green my favourite colour? There is no logical reason, I just like it.  I remember my mom making fantastic cakes for us when we were kisds. She had (and still has I think) a book on making cakes of all different shapes and themes. From the incredible hulk to a koala bear. I know she made me the horse’s head when I was in my horse-crazy phase, and I remember her making a standing-up donosaur for my little brother. The dinosaur’s head kept falling off so it had to be propped up by a stick. I don’t remember the first time I ever baked something, I think because I baked a lot as a teenager. I remember making lamingtons, pinwheel biscuits and chocolate cake.
Of course I could not have this little blog, this tiny snippet of cyberspace all to myself if it were not for my othe half. Partner in crime and in life. In this blog I am going to call him Handyman. Because he is handy. He can fix anything. Its like magic. He also has an instinctual knack for just knowing how anything technological/mechanical works. Its like a 6th sense. He is also handy in the kitchen on the occasion when I need a 3rd or 4th hand to hold a bowl while scooping cake batter or take a photo while I have my hands full of chocoalte ganache. So he helped me create this little blog, get it kind of looking how I want it to, and he’s pretty invaluable around the house.

So now, I have a day job. And after hours I bake and cook and run. All the things that I love. And I write a little bit about them. I have always liked writing too. Maybe because I am rubbish at talking with actual words. I’m shy and very bad at small talk. But when writing, I have time to think about what I want to say. Nobody interrupts and nobody argues. Perfect.

Thank you for looking at my little blog. If you’d like to get in touch I’d love to hear from you. You can e-mail me on

Happy baking 🙂

Just love all your Sweet Nothings…

  2. Hi,

I wanted to get in contact as we are looking for places to host content and adverts for a number of our clients .

Typically we would like to provide you with some content with a link already inserted that you can quickly add to your site or work with you to create a post that suits. The content is of good quality written by experienced UK writers which will provide good value to your readers as well.

If you do not wish to host a link advert then we have a number of partners who might be worth speaking to who place more traditional adverts.

The clients in question are all well known UK brands and I would be very interested to understand under what agreement you would be happy to place that content for us?

Please let me know if you have any interest in the above and thanks in advance for your consideration.
